I hate fruit flies!! How about you? Most fruit flies are attracted to bananas or sweet fruits that may be on your kitchen counter and begin to multiply rather quickly. If you do not have fruit hanging around on your counter, then how did they get in your house in the first place? It is quite possible that your screens in your window became the door that they needed to get in!
One night my husband asked me to find a bottle of wine, my choice, and open it. I found one and did just that pouring us a glass to enjoy. I put that glass down for a time and went off to do something. When I came back I noticed a ‘floater’ in my wine! It was a fruit fly! I was rather grossed out and surely was not into the ‘protein’ that that little bug was going to give me should I consume it. I headed into the kitchen and fished it out.
While I was in the kitchen I had a brainstorm! If the fruit flies loved my glass of wine as much as I did, then why not give them their own!! I took a small clear glass bowl and poured some of this wine in there. I took some plastic wrap, placed it over the bowl then secured it with a rubber band over the rim of the bowl. I then took a toothpick and made about 15 small holes in the plastic wrap. I left the kitchen and went about my business only to hear my husband say a short time later, ‘WHAT did you do this for???’ I walked in the kitchen and explained my grand plan. He said, ‘Ummmm did you know this is a $150.00 bottle of wine??!!’ I gasped then laughed and said, ‘Hey smart fruit flies and wine connoisseurs since they kept dive bombing into my glass of wine!’
Over the next few days I watched that sealed bowl and sure enough as time went on there were many fruit flies who had found their way into my expensive homemade wine fruit fly trap. They obviously could not get out and were floating in the wine.
Do you need to use wine? No. You can use whatever sweet thing you can find in your home that they love naturally and place it in that bowl to get the same effect. I did try a cheaper wine and they like that, too. Lesson to be learned: if you are asked to select a bottle of wine, you need to ask the price before making your own homemade fruit fly trap! For the record, I no long pick out bottles of wine
Some fruit fly facts that I have found and want to share:
They will multiply rapidly on organic matter that may be decomposing, like bananas on your counter.
They can also develop in your garbage disposal drains if they are not run and kept clean on a regular basis.
