How many times has someone asked you at this time of year, ‘What is your New Year’s Resolution?’ I personally don’t make them anymore because I never stick to them or it just is a set up for failure of some sort. Sure there were times way back in high school when it was the ‘in thing’ to make them and brag about them. It almost became a contest on who had the most inspiring resolutions and how you could kick your resolution up a notch. Those days are long gone!
If I make a resolution it is private. I stress the word ‘if’ here! Keep a pad and paper next to you and when some idea pops in your head about something important to you, write it down, memorize it and then burn that paper so there is no evidence. It gives you a 100% chance to deny all of it.
Some of the things you could write down that have meaning to you are:
- Lose weight
- Stop smoking
- Get organized
- Find time for you somewhere on this planet. Maybe visit a spa each quarter?
- Start an exercise program
- Change your eating habits
This list is practical and could go on and on. What about the impractical list? You know, people you hear in the store yakking on their cell phones and telling the world all about their breast implants? Or the ones who can’t wrap their arms around themselves tight enough to give them that personal hug. Or how about the people that are just rude and have no clue about how they appear to others? Let’s look at an impractical list:
- Stop yelling/talking loudly at the person on your cell phone in a public place (includes: stores, movie theaters, banks etc…)
- Stop taking a bath in my favorite perfume because it smells so bad to everyone that it caused the person next to me to have an asthma attack.
- If you have eaten something to give you wicked gas, you promise not to let one rip in a public place and walk away letting everyone else think ‘someone else did it’…oh that includes church. (I saw some guy do this in the store and just shook my head in amazement. FYI…it was not silent!)
- You will pretend you are not color blind and will find clothing that sort of matches so you don’t draw attention to yourself wearing stripes and polka dots together…even though you think it looks phenomenal.
Those are just a few possible resolutions, but you get the idea. I am sure some of you have other ideas that you could write down here. I welcome your insights to resolutions! Please feel free to add some of your own.
And as a final word….I resolve to not have to resolve anything every again just because….
